There was not going to be a repeat of the famous Hail Mary last week at the boys' state 3A basketball tournament.
When Hurricane found out that Juan Diego would be its opponent in the quarterfinal, the chance for redemption for football was there. Thirty-three of the 35 players in Hurricane's basketball program also played football and suffered an agonizing 12-10 loss on the final play of the football championship in December.
Juan Diego would have needed another comeback in the basketball tournament after managing just nine first-half points. The Soaring Eagle lost 60-49 to conclude an 11-10 season.
"You don't ever want to have something in your mind that you can't beat anybody just because they beat you," said Hurricane coach Gordon Dotson . "We got the monkey off their back that we can beat Juan Diego."
Seasons end early
While West Jordan is quietly defending its 5A championship and Bingham enters the state tournament as a favorite, basketball season ended for Cottonwood and Riverton on Saturday night with play-in game losses.
Cottonwood once again put a scare into Jordan before the Beetdiggers escaped with a 52-49 decision while Riverton fell to Syracuse 54-45.
When the teams met in January at Energy Solutions Arena, it took a strong fourth quarter from Kevin Goldsmith to give Jordan the victory. Goldsmith stepped up again, scoring 11 of his 15 in the second half.
Korbin Dooley had 16 points for Cottonwood, which finished the season 10-11. He also led the Colts in scoring for the season with a 12.5 clip.
Over in Riverton, the Silverwolves' 7-15 season concluded after visiting Syracuse got 25 points from junior Nick Winegar and the Titans hit 27 of 33 free throws. Riverton closed to four points with two minutes, but could come no closer. Garrett Gundestrup led Riverton for the season with a 9.7 average.
Alta girls return talent
Region 4 can be content in getting two teams -- Pleasant Grove and American Fork -- to the final four of the Class 5A tournament last week. Alta didn't get to Salt Lake Community College, but got some experience when it had to face eventual champion Syracuse in the second round, falling by 25. Only one Hawk starter, Becca Beaudoin , is graduating and sophomore point guard MacKenzie Morrison heads a promising returning crew. Alta finished 15-8.
