Murray coach Jason Workman thinks he has one of the best homecourt advantages in Region 2.
So why have the Spartans faltered at home this season?
Not only did Friday night's loss to Skyline snap a four-game winning streak and play havoc on Murray's state tournament seeding hopes, the 49-39 setback dropped Murray's home record to 3-5.
"It's kind of funny that we struggle more at home," Workman said. "It's really unusual."
Court-wise, it's been a matter of a shooting slump. Murray labored to win a 42-35 decision the previous week at Cottonwood and then everything fell apart against Skyline.
Workman's trio of long-range shooters went a combined 0-19 from three-point range. Skyline capitalized and jumped out to a 22-3 lead before Murray worked the deficit down to four despite going scoreless from behind the arc.
"It's an uncomfortable slump we're trying to fight through," Workman said. "All my shooters [Cade Bullough, Riley Grandenetti and Justin Escarciga] are capable, that's the funny thing.
"Shooting is all confidence," Workman said. "I'm not going to stop them from shooting."
One player Workman definitely won't keep from shooting is 6-foot-7 junior David Collette, who could be one of the state's most underrated players.
He's averaging 17.3 points and a game and has reached double figures in every game.
"David's legit," Workman said. "A lot of people don't know David that well. He wasn't doing the AAU circuit last summer ... he was a skinny sophomore and not doing much damage. He's developing. Every game he's showing a new facet. It's been fun to watch."
Skyline's victory earned the team a sweep of Murray in the regular season in addition to continuing the home woes. The Spartans may need to win out -- including topping first-place West --for a shot at moving into the Region 2 second seed.
At 9-9, Workman likes what he sees.
"When we put it all together, we're capable," Workman said. "We have the size and shooters, we just need to win the games we should."
Murray has a chance to finish .500 at home, ending the season with Granger visiting Friday and Cyprus on Feb. 23.
» Junior David Collette averages 17.3 points to lead the Murray boys' basketball team.
» The Spartans had won four straight games before losing Friday to Skyline.
