At any other pool on any other day, Provo High's Chace Harrison probably would have been happy with the results of his 500-yard freestyle performance at the state 4A swim meet.
On this given Saturday, Harrison was mad. A good mad, but mad nonetheless.
The ultra-competitive Harrison clocked one of his best times with a 4:51.34, but had to settle for third-place behind Olympus' Shawn Western and Springville's Calvin Clark, who won with a 4:43.77.
Coming in behind Clark was grinding Harrison's gears.
Harrison and Clark have been AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) teammates for more than five years. Of course they're friends but there is a rivalry -- a big rivalry.
"I'm really competitive and I hate to lose," Harrison said. "I'm angry a little. I think I could have done a lot better."
Harrison had beaten Clark in the event before.
"We've been going back and forth," Harrison said. "We went to Arizona for a meet and I killed him in the 500. Today he got me. I honestly thought I could beat him today. When he pulled ahead, I kind of gave up. It was a mental thing. Give him credit for a good swim. I'm happy for him."
Harrison's signature moment came Friday when he convincingly won the 200 freestyle.
He clocked a personal best of 1:44.82 and finished nearly a second ahead of Box Elder's Kallin Raymond. He shaved four seconds off the time he had last year in finishing as runner-up to semi-legend Joe Beutler of Snow Canyon.
Still, the competitive Harrison found things he can improve upon.
"I was shooting for a college time and I was kind of disappointed that I didn't make that," Harrison said. "But I was pretty excited that I swam the time I did."
Provo coach Vaughn Johnson was impressed with Harrison's final swim as a Bulldog.
"He gave it his all and a first and a third is nothing to be sad about," Johnson said. "Chace has always been very focused. This year he broke school records that have stood for quite a while."
Provo's boys team finished 14th in the team competition. Springville was denied a third straight team title as future BYU swimmer and Olympic hopeful Jake Taylor led Mountain Crest to a narrow victory.
In addition to the 500, Clark also won the 200 individual medley. Springville coach Amyee Hargett was selected as Coach of the Year.
In the girls' competition, defending champion Timpview settled for third behind Logan and Olympus. Spanish Fork senior Bonny Dowling, who won the 100 butterfly and finished second by .08 seconds in the 50 freestyle, was named the female swimmer of the meet.
