It was a contrast of styles -- size vs. speed, strength vs. stamina. But after a series of runs equalized into a tense final three minutes, the Pleasant Grove boys' basketball team outmuscled Jordan down the stretch to earn the 47-43 win on Tuesday night -- and effectively throw an unpredictable Region 4 for another loop.

"Our big guys can't spring up and down the court like [Jordan does] for 32 minutes," Pleasant Grove coach Randy McAllister said. "But we were able to come back and play their style for a bit. We pushed the ball and had a good finish."

But after Jordan overcame an early 11-2 deficit, it was the Beetdiggers who were running the show -- literally -- as Kevin Goldsmith outran the Vikings to tally up 13 first-half points on easy layins.

When Pleasant Grove's shooting plateaued in the third quarter, it looked as though Jordan was in for smooth sailing. A series of perfectly executed plays, highlighted by Taylor Smith's quick layup, steal and feed to Steve Morgan, gave the Beetdiggers a 10-point lead heading into the final quarter.

"That's not what we wanted to have happen," McAllister said. "But credit to our kids for responding and fighting back."

The Vikings piled on the pressure late in the fourth quarter, led by the combination of the aggressive offensive play of Bryan Sampson and Sefa Tanoai and defensive chops of Brady Hoglund.

Goldsmith had a chance to tie the game on two free throws in the final minute. When his second attempt bounced off the rim, the Beetdiggers had a last-second chance for a rebound and a put-back.

But this time, size won out as Pleasant Grove's Joe Kruger pulled down Jordan's last-chance.

"We just had to keep our heads up. We knew we could come back,"said Tanoi, who led the Vikings with 14 points. "This was a big confidence booster for us, but there's still a long road ahead."
