The Skyline girls' basketball team has become accustomed to success. Not much has changed with the new Region 2 this season.
With all respect to the rest of Region 2, there hasn't been a single team that has shown it is ready to compete with Skyline in the regular season. No one has pushed the Eagles to their limits since the Eagles lost to Brighton in December. Coach Deb Bennett has developed a reputation for discipline and strong team play and this season is no exception.
The Eagles lack a game-breaker, and they seem quite happy with that. Five players, Hannah Bezdjian, Miquelle Askew, Abbie Brickley, Whitney Jenkins and Katie Walker, are nearly averaging 10 points per game apiece. The Eagles aren't the biggest team, but what they lack in size make up for in skill and experience. After making the 4A finals twice in a row, Skyline had trouble adjusting to a full starting roster turnover last year. Bennett certainly has them firing on all cylinders now, however.
Total domination is what comes to mind when seeing the Eagles' results thus far. The closest game has been a pair of 17-point wins over Murray and Cyprus. It may only be halfway through the season, but it seems Skyline is cruising to the Region 2 title.
Cottonwood
The Colts managed to finish January on a high note with four wins in their final five games of the month.
It's been an up-and-down season for the Colts. They have been unable to get on a roll thus far, failing to win more than two games in a row up to their matchup with Murray on Friday. On the flip side, they haven't allowed themselves to slide either.
The No. 3 spot in Region 2 will play the No. 2 seed on Region 1's home court in the first round of the playoffs. Layton, Weber and Clearfield all are in contention for that spot behind Syracuse.
Player of the Week » Olympus' Amanda Dibblee
After losing two in a row, Dibblee scored a career high of 25 points to rally the Titans to a fourth quarter comeback victory over Bountiful.
Big Number » 32.9.
The Skyline Eagles have an average margin of victory of 32.9 points per game during the region season.
Game of the Week » Cottonwood at Murray, Friday at 5:15 p.m.
Both teams are vying for the second spot in Region 2 and home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The Spartans have been on a roll since the start of the year and the Colts are playing their best ball of the year, leaving little doubt that these rivals won't leave it all out on the court.
