Figuring out Kyle Collinsworth isn't easy. It goes against every grain.
The Provo senior is a career 1,000-point scorer, he leads Class 4A in scoring with just over 22 a game and he makes it look easy. Maybe too easy.
When you watch the BYU-signee play, why does it feel like he's not scoring enough?
That's how it goes with these franchise players -- you expect the 30- or 40-point nights, especially in rivalry games and region play.
Case in point, Provo's 46-32 demolition of Timpview last Tuesday. Collinsworth got his 20 as the Bulldogs did everything right -- play defense, crash the boards -- to take the lead in the Region 7 standings.
Afterward, Provo coach Craig Drury allowed himself a moment to question.
"In a game like this, [Collinsworth] should have had 30," Drury admitted. "But he's such an unselfish player. He wants to pass the ball and get the assists. He could score at will but he kicks the ball out.
"I can't fault that. How do I say there's something wrong with that? That's great basketball."
It's hard to argue with the results.
"We're undefeated in region and that's what matters," Collinsworth said.
One look at Collinsworth's stat line confirms not only his unselfishness, but a complete game.
At 6-foot-6, Collinsworth is a college guard, but his height gives him in a key role in the Bulldogs' post game.
Not only is he producing double-doubles, Collinsworth posted consecutive triple-doubles against Orem and Mountain View two weeks ago and has been one assist shy of three more triple-doubles in region play.
His steal average -- nearly four a game -- is high because he plays like a guard against the post players and forces the loose ball.
Collinsworth enjoys making sure his teammate get theirs as much as he gets his. Against Timpview, that was Keith Moore, who drove to the basket to get 13 points.
"Keith's my man," Collinsworth said. "He does a good job of getting to the hole. People put a slow four [post] man on him and he'll have a mismatch all night."
Drury has the right combinations to complement Collinsworth.
"Moore's left handed and that always helps. He's an aggressive player and I love kids like that," Drury said. "My other senior [Ryan] Durrant is the sweet shooter. I have a good combination at the perimeter."
Durrant's averaging 12 points a game, Moore 8.6
Provo hosted Lehi on Tuesday and plays Maple Mountain on Thursday.
To show how much an enigma Collinsworth can be, consider what he did the next night at Timpanogos.
He hit 37. A career-high. His first 30-point game.
Go figure.
