The Mountain View girls' basketball team had all of the big shots in its 54-38 win over Lehi on Thursday night.

The Bruins had all of the best-timed shots as well as Eden Wairepo drained a clutch 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer and Shanna Halilio's bullet from behind the arc to ward off the encroaching Pioneers at the end of the third quarter.

"Those are designed plays for us. It's a fun play and the girls love to run it," Mountain View coach Andrew Blanchard said. "But I think a few teams are starting to find out about it."

The Pioneers realized it too late.

Mountain View got off to a quick start, taking a 10-3 lead late in the first quarter. But the lead could have been more.

Though Bruins held Lehi to just free throws in the first quarter, they missed a series of easy layups in the first quarter -- eight to be exact -- which allowed the Pioneers to keep things relatively close.

Lehi rallied in the second quarter, cutting the Bruins lead to 17-13 in the final minute before the half. Midway through the fourth quarter, Jackie Cattani hit a well-timed 3-pointer of her own to bring the Pioneers within two points.

But Lehi's mini-runs never got it over the hump. The Bruins closed out the second quarter on a 5-0 run to earn a nine-point cushion at the break and returned two late steals for easy layups to end the threat.

"When you play with a lead, it's hard to lose," Blanchard said.

"It puts all the pressure on the team that's behind."

The Bruins took care of the rest at the foul line, draining 19 of 21 free-throws in the fourth quarter, including 9 of 9 from Halalilo, to fend of the slap-happy Pioneers and split the regular season series.

"We got our revenge. And it was sweet," said Halalilo.
