The Taylorsville boys' basketball team defeated Kearns 84-81 in double-overtime on Friday night.

That's the short story.

The longer one includes Taylorsville Yai Ajak's three clutch rebounds that sealed the win in the second overtime period. It includes Kearns' second-quarter run which was quickly negated by Taylorsville after the break. It highlights the four clutch free-throws from Kearns' Justyn Searle who, despite having missed his first four attempts at the line, knocked down the two that tied the game in the final seconds of regulation and the game's combined 23 shots made from behind the arc, including five from Taylorsville's Andrew Togiai who finished with 33 points.

But in a game with as much tension, lead changes, 3-pointers and tide-turning plays as this one, you've got to start somewhere.

"That was high school basketball at its best," Taylorsville coach Ron Burnside said. "The kids deserve games like that. It's Friday night basketball. Win or lose, games like that are what it's all about."

But it was up to Taylorsville to make it a game in the second half.

Kearns Andrew Lokeni had made it look easy under the basket, scoring 12 of his 22 points on easy five-foot jumpers as the Cougars turned a four-point first-quarter deficit into a 37-29 lead at the break.

But after the break, the Warriors quickly regrouped and focused on what they do best -- shooting the ball. The third quarter was a flurry of 3-pointers -- nine to be exact. But by the end, Taylorsville had rallied to tie the game 52-52. Eight minutes and Searle's four clutch buckets later, the game was still deadlocked to force the overtime period..

When the Warriors brought in their secret weapon in Ajak, things fell into place.

"I just came in and tried to do my thing -- get rebounds," Ajak said.

And the Cougars ran out of luck. Searle and J.R. Finai each missed a pair of free-throws for Kearns while Togiai and Wesley Wright each made two to seal the win.
