Lehi » After Kyle Collinsworth did what Kyle Collinsworth is supposed to do with the game on the line, the Provo senior engaged in a nice chat with Lehi's William Walker as the Pioneers tried to overturn the Bulldogs' 48-46 victory in the Region 7 opener for both teams.
"Foul me," Walker told Collinsworth. "I'll hit the free throws and we'll go overtime."
"Nah," replied Collinsworth, whose drive through down the lane 4 four seconds remaining helped the Bulldogs (7-2,1-0) escape with a victory after they went scoreless the first 5:08 of the fourth frame.
Behind Walker's game-high 23 points and his everyman effort in the post, the upstart Pioneers (7-2,0-1) kept within striking distance after falling behind 10 points in the second quarter, then took advantage of Provo's cold streak to take their only lead of the game at 43-42 on Walker's basket with 4:20 left.
"Lehi has good bigs [players]," Collinsworth said. "We learned a lot from this game."
Provo controlled the clock for the final three minutes, but scored on all three possessions. In addition to Collinsworth's game-winner that gave him his 20th point, the Bulldogs also got two key free throws from Andrew Finch that made it a 46-43 Bulldog lead with 1:19 left after Provo ran a minute off the clock.
Walker's three-point play with 55.5 seconds left tied it.
Ryan Durrant set the tone early for Provo by hitting a trio of three-pointers in the opening three minutes as the Bulldogs raced out to 21 first-quarter points. Strong defense led by Lehi's Ryan Christoffersen kept him to two points the rest of the way. Keith Moore had 12 points, but was limited by foul trouble.
The Bulldogs look tired after halftime and scored just 12 points.
"We need to work on our conditioning," said Provo coach Craig Drury. "Lehi beat us in the second half, but fortunately didn't do it by far enough. How about that take by Collinsworth? Great player."
Kyle Collinsworth hits a bucket with 4 seconds lift to give Provo the victory over the Pioneers.
