Jordan boys' basketball forward Kevin Goldsmith going franchise during the fourth quarter of Saturday's 58-49 victory over Cottonwood at EnergySolutions Arena had as much as do with personal redemption as his role as a go-to guy.
"I sucked the first three quarters, so I figured I had to do something special in the fourth," acknowledged Goldsmith, who scored 12 of his game-high 23 points in the final eight minutes to help the Beetdiggers conclude a busy week.
Jordan fed the ball to Goldsmith in the post on nearly every possession down the stretch, and he scored eight straight points as the Beetdiggers (7-2) pulled away from a 38-38 tie after three quarters.
It was Jordan's fourth game of the week after finishing third in the Logan tournament with a 2-1 mark. Any excitement about playing on the Utah Jazz's home court was practically canceled out by exhaustion.
"I liked playing here, but at the same time, I wanted to get it over with because I couldn't shoot worth [anything]," Goldsmith said. "I felt like I was half asleep, couldn't dribble the ball, couldn't finish at the rim until the fourth."
Scheduled in between the Logan tournament and next week's Region 4 opener at American Fork, Jordan coach Rob Geersten knew this had every possibility of becoming a trap game.
"We were just trying to gut it out and get away with a win," Geersten said. "You didn't see a lot of excitement out of our guys because we know we didn't play our best game. We're a little tired from the long week."
