One of the brightest stars for the Provo boys' basketball team is undoubtedly senior guard Kyle Collinsworth.
But having one exceptional player doesn't always win ball games and that is what Provo is trying to instill in their other players. Where better than Provo? The head coach has won myriad state titles. He knows a thing or two about winning.
"We have an exceptional player in Kyle but the other teams know that and are double- and triple-teaming him," said assistant coach Jim McAvoy. "If our supporting players play well, we will win -- it's that simple. We're not quite where we'd like to be but we are getting there."
They might not be quite there, but the Bulldogs appear to be close. Entering this week, Provo was 5-2. Not great, but look closer at those two losses. Provo lost a double-overtime game to American Fork 54-52. Last week, it was a 62-55 overtime loss to Alta.
Both losses came in overtime and both came to Class 5A teams. You could reasonably deduce the 4A Bulldogs are looking good this season.
Collinsworth has plenty to do with that. He is a 6-foot-6 point guard, but he does more than just run the offense. He averages about 21 points per game, at least 10 assists and has more than 10 rebounds per game. Beyond the statistics though, Collinsworth helps create opportunities for other players on his team. That's what's made him a prized recruit for BYU, where he will go after graduation this spring.
But what has made Provo great in the past -- including a state title during Collinsworth's freshman and sophomore seasons -- is more than one player. What makes Provo dominant in Class 4A is other guys on the team that are equally good, such as Keith Moore, who is one of the Bulldogs' best rebounders. There's also Ryan Durrant, who has shown a knack for hitting key free throws. Senior Kalieo Manuela stands at 6-foot-7 and McAvoy said he has come a long way since the season began and has gotten much faster and better at defense.
McAvoy said the Bulldogs' biggest weakness at the moment is rebounding and because Collinsworth is so good at it, he said the other guys let him get them and don't go for them themselves.
One guy can't do everything, after all.
"Kyle is good but he can't get everything. These guys are learning to play off of Kyle and work with him so he doesn't have to do everything," McAvoy said.
» The Bulldogs are led by senior point guard Kyle Collinsworth, but coaches say it will take more than one future Division I player to earn another state title.
» Keith Moore, Ryan Durrant and Kalieo Manuela all figure to be key to the Bulldogs' plans for a state title run.
