When Bingham isn't shooting well, the Miners usually rely on their defense. It's also the backup plan for when the other team is shooting well, too.

With 3 minutes, 43 seconds left in the game, Davis cut Bingham's lead to two after draining three straight three-pointers. Although the Darts came close, they never took the lead. Meanwhile, the Miners forced some key turnovers to preserve a 58-49 win in a preseason matchup that featured two of the top teams in Class 5A.

"I looked up and they were only down by two," said Bingham guard Shad Sommerville, who had 19 points. "It was good for us to grind out a game. It helped our confidence and it's definitely a building game for us."

Even though Bingham led throughout the game, the Darts had surges that kept them a few baskets away at some points and continuously made them a threat.

The Miners went to Ben Clifford inside to set the tone early. Davis had trouble defending him and he scored 14 of his game-leading 20 points in the first half. On the offensive end, the Darts hesitated to take it strong to the basket.

But by the end of the second quarter, the Darts adjusted and played better defense on Clifford and cut the lead to 21-18 at one point before settling for a seven-point deficit at halftime.

"They're a very good defensive team," Bingham coach Mark Dubach said. "Clifford gets doubled team a lot but they didn't do that because they had respect for our shooters."

The Miners had a 10-point lead heading into the fourth quarter but Davis never went away and slowly chipped at the deficit.

Then three consecutive Davis three-pointers -- two by Trevor Webb and one by Landon Horne -- pulled Davis to 51-49 with 21/2 minutes remaining. But Bingham forced turnovers and made free throws to seal the win.
