Tallon Burton never panicked. Being a senior at Davis kind of does that to you. Instead, with the clock winding down, Burton calmly plucked a Landon Horne miss out of the air, pivoted, and hit the game-winning layup at the buzzer.

The Darts 55-54 overtime win against West Jordan on Tuesday night signifies one thing: Davis, despite losing five senior starters from last season, isn't going anywhere when it comes to Class 5A favorites. Instead, the Darts will be a factor.

"Every game, we're just trying to get better," Burton said. "We want to get ready for region, and improve every time we step out on the floor."

The season is young, but the Darts already have a trio of quality wins. Davis now has beaten West Jordan, Alta and Jordan, and the Darts have done it with the kind of resiliency that a Jay Welk coached team is noted for.

The Darts led by as many as nine points against the Jaguars, but were forced into the extra session when Jaguars senior guard Jesse Herrin rushed the ball up court with time winding down in regulation and hit a three-pointer from the top of the key.

In overtime, missed free throws and layups caused Davis to find itself down 54-53 with nine seconds left. Instead of calling a timeout, Welk let his team push the ball.

"I was going to call a timeout, but I decided not to," Welk said. "Timeouts can work against you as much as they can work for you. You don't want to let the other team set its defense up, and Scott Briggs is one of the best coaches in the state."

Burton led the Darts with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Trevor Webb scored 13 and Kyle Smith added 12.

For West Jordan, the defending Class 5A state champions, Josh Woodruff scored a game-high 16 points before fouling out.
