West ground out a homecoming win over Hunter on Friday as West running back Misitana Afeaki outgained Hunter by himself while rushing for two touchdowns. Afeaki's second score capped off a four-minute, nine-second drive that rumbled 48 yards and put the game out of reach at 21-3. West went on to win 21-10 to improve to 2-2.
The key drive left only 2:02 on the clock.
"Our offensive line stepped up tonight," Afeaki said. "Without them we can't run."
Afeaki ran for 182 yards on 19 carries and added two receptions for 13 yards.
"When there's a guy that steps up our whole team steps up," he said. "I just thank the line."
The West defensive line and linebackers weren't too bad either. Semisi Afeaki and Josh Fitisemanu lead the charge, combining for four of West's 10 tackles-for-loss. Hunter amounted just 191 yards of offense in the loss, 49 of which came on two Brett Lunceford scrambles, trying to will his team back into the game.
"We learned today from last week," West coach Justin Spencer said. "We got our butts kicked last week in the trenches because we weren't lined up right."
Hunter was able spark here and there with big plays, but mistakes and inconsistency hindered any threat they made. The win gave West a win in both team's first Region 2 game of the season. Emotion was high, which was evident in the game's dying moments. After Hunter's Lunceford found Niko Davidson in the end zone to make the score 21-10, the Wolverines executed an onside kick. In the ensuing scrum for the ball, a Hunter player began punching a West player, causing West players to rush to their teammate's aid. Coaches, police and game officials were able to restore order before things got out of control.
"With these two teams, it's so volatile," Spencer said. "I know how hard and emotional they play and we do, too."
