Stansbury Park » Friday night at Stansbury Stadium featured a matchup of two teams playing their first game ever, with the Stansbury Stallions rolling to an easy win 35-7 over the Maple Mountain Golden Eagles.
Stansbury was led by a three-headed rushing monster that seemed to get stronger as the game wore on. Stallions coach Clint Christiansen gave credit to his stable of running backs but heaped praise on the offensive line.
"The O-line was dominant in the second half, and they opened up some big holes for our runners to get through" Christiansen said.
The Stallions had three runners that were rushing through huge holes throughout the game.
EJ Jones had 15 carries for 88 yards and two touchdowns, Payeton Reed ran for 77 yards and two scores, and Garreth Anderson racked up 79 yards running and one score on 11 carries.
The game was close in the first half, with Stansbury taking a 14-7 lead into halftime. To start off the third quarter, the Golden Eagles forced Stansbury to punt in their own territory.
But instead of taking the ball with a short field, Maple Mountain was flagged for an illegal substitution that gave Stansbury the ball back with a fresh set of downs.
The Stallions never looked back and went on a seven-play, 60-yard drive that was capped off by a three-yard touchdown run by Jones for a 21-7 Stallions' lead.
Stansbury would go on to score two more touchdowns, and were never threatened the rest of the way.
Said Anderson of the first win in school history: "It's a great feeling knowing that we were the first team to have a win in Stallions history, and hopefully this is the start of a special season."
