West Valley City » If the Lone Peak boys' basketball team was expecting a cakewalk through the first round of the 5A state tournament at the E Center on Monday, Jordan wanted to make it clear early that the Knights had something else coming to them. While Lone Peak slept-walked through the first quarter, Jordan took advantage of the opportunity to lead by as many as six in the first period and by one point at halftime. But once Tyler Haws showed up to play with seven unanswered points to start the third quarter, there was little the Beetdiggers could do to keep pace with the heavily favored Knights, who cruised to a 50-36 victory to advance to Wednesday's quarterfinal against Weber.
For Lone Peak coach Quincy Lewis, the most important thing for the defending state champion Knights was to maintain their composure amid Jordan's tough triangular defense.
"There's something called a big red button. It says 'panic' on it," he said. "You want to push it. You're dying to push it. But you've just got to continue to play."
