Springville jumped out to an early lead on West and never looked back, winning 57-34 in the first round of the 4A girls' state basketball tournament Tuesday. Lexi Eaton scored a game-high 21 points and Ashley Kroneberger was all over the court making plays for the Red Devils.
The Panthers seemed like they were stuck in neutral for most of the first half, scoring two points in the first quarter and finishing the half down 32-11.
"We just came out tonight and played with a fire, an intensity that comes with playoff basketball," Kroneberger said. "Our game plan was to put the pressure on them early and it worked out."
West went on a run in the third quarter, cutting Springville's lead down to 12 points. Red Devil's coach Nancy Warner then called a time out to try and slow West's momentum down.
"We lost our intensity there in the third quarter," Warner said. "West had cut it to 14, and that's only four or five baskets from a close game, so I called the time out and got us all on the same page and fired the squad back up."
Springville proceeded to knock down a three and an easy layup, putting the game out of reach. Kroneberger had 10 points and three blocks, and Eaton had fives assists to go along with her 21 points. West's Valencia Manu scored a team-high 11 points, and Amy Christensen chipped in with eight points.
Payson 44, Dixie 40 » Dixie made things interesting, going on a 13-6 run in the third quarter, but couldn't find enough firepower to beat Payson.
Sky View 49, Cottonwood 22 »There wasn't much doubt top-ranked Sky View would win, and a 26-7 second-half advantage insured the Bobcats' advanced.
Roy 41, Olympus 30 » Roy never trailed in the game, with Krystin Jachim scoring 14 points for the Royals. Carly Duckworth scored a team-high 10 points for Olympus.
