The beautiful thing about tournament time is the upsets. It's even more beautiful when a No. 8 seed defeats a No. 1 seed.

The No. 8-seed Orem Bruins defeated the No. 1-seed Murray Spartans 50-44 in the first upset of the first round of the 4A girls' basketball tournament Tuesday.

"We felt good about the match-up, Region 7 plays good basketball, I think that overall we've played tougher teams" said Orem coach Ross Reed. "We were worried about their perimeter game, they've got some good perimeter shooters."

It might have been the perimeter shooting that did in the Spartans on Tuesday. Murray went 6-for-24 from behind the arc and shot 32 percent from the field. Both teams went shot for shot through most of the game, but Orem managed to hold a slim margin throughout the game and only led the Spartans by three going into the fourth quarter.

"I've been coaching too long to ever assume something is going to happen," said Ross of his team's chances to hold on and score the big upset.

Orem moves on to face cross-town rival Mountain View in the team's third meeting this season. Mountain View won both games, but Orem says it's confident after its upset victory Tuesday.

"We want prove that we can play with (Mountain View) and we can beat them," said Love. "We proved we can play with Murray, we can play with Mountain View."

Mountain View 53, Woods Cross 44 » Mountain View survived a first-quarter scare from Woods Cross to advance. Christina Augustine led the Bruins with 14 points. Mountain View's J.J. Pettit, who scored 13 points, left the game briefly with a ankle injury, but returned to play before fouling out.

Snow Canyon 51, Provo 37 » Kylie Moore scored 18 points as Snow Canyon cruised to a win over the Bulldogs. Ashley Kuchar led Provo with 13 points.

Highland 53, Mountain Crest 49 (OT) » Chanel Roe had 17 points and 12 rebounds in Highland's victory. Brynn Foster led the Mustangs with 15 points.
