West Jordan » The West Jordan boys' basketball team used a 28-0 run in the first half to build a commanding lead that it never let go of, beating Bingham 79-65 for a huge road victory in Region 3.
It was Rayes Gallegos' show at Bingham on Friday night, as the senior was on fire seemingly the whole game, leading all scorers with 31 points.
Bingham actually started off the game well, trading buckets with the Jags, even leading the Jags 9-6 halfway through the first quarter. But that would be their last lead of the night, as West Jordan went on its 28-0 run that spanned two quarters. Led by Gallegos' and Jordan Weirick's scoring, the duo combined to score 27 points in the first half as the Jags went into halftime up 34-9.
"Last game Bingham beat up on us so much down low. We wanted to get out and run tonight, and we executed our game plan perfectly in the first half," West Jordan coach Scott Briggs.
In the third quarter, West Jordan had a lot of the same success as in the first, with Gallegos continuing to score at will from the perimeter. The 6-foot-2 senior was money from long range, knocking down five three-pointers in the game.
"Ray always has the green light, and tonight was just one of those nights when he was dead on," Briggs said.
The fourth quarter saw the Jags move more to a bleed-the-clock approach, which let the Miners slowly creep back into the game, as Bingham cut the lead down to 14 with 6:30 left to play. But West Jordan's Mason Sawyer hit some key baskets and Weirick had a huge block on what seemed like an easy Miner fast break layup that helped the Jags.
"Our three seniors [Gallegos, Sawyer and Weirick] were huge tonight. They have played varsity ball for three years now, and their court intelligence is off the charts. They came into a hostile environment, and played under control the whole night," Briggs said.
