Riverton » The Riverton High boys' basketball team kicked off its Region 3 schedule with a bang at home, overcoming a two-point first quarter to steal a win away from Bingham, 41-36.
Bingham jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first quarter. It seemed like Riverton's offense could never find a flow, clanking shots, turning the ball over and stalling any momentum the Silverwolves tried to put together.
Things started to turn around in the second quarter, with Bingham's offense taking its turn out of sync. Riverton closed the gap, and the two teams went into halftime with the Miners up 13-12.
Bingham then came out strong to start the second half, pushing the lead to double digits midway through the third quarter. Much of the scoring in the Miners' run came from Remington Peck, who finished the game with 15 points.
The Silverwolves battled back again, with two huge three-point shots by Garret Gundestrup that kept the game close, allowing Riverton make one last push in the final period.
Sean Nielson came alive for Riverton, scoring seven quick points to cut the deficit to two. Nielson finished the game with 15 points.
Down 34-32, Riverton's defense came up with a huge steal and fast-break layup by Scott Friel that tied the game.
Friel then stole the ball off the inbounds pass and got another layup, giving Riverton its first lead of the game with 2:31 left and sending the crowd into a frenzy.
Bingham's Remington Marlor tied the game 36-36 with two free throws, but those would be the last points the Miners would score.
Nielson came back and made two free throws to make it 38-36 with 36 seconds left. Marlor then missed two free throws and Riverton tacked on a few more to ice the game.
Said Silverwolves coach Steve Galley: "We played one the worst halves we've ever played in the first, but we were still in the game. We were playing a great team, and we just kept fighting; it wasn't pretty, but a win's a win."
