Highland » Thirty points in 20 minutes put Tyler Haws in prime position to establish a new Lone Peak single-game scoring record Friday night against Brighton.
But when Haws exited in the fourth quarter, he left with the Knights' rebounding mark instead as Lone Peak posted a 94-72 tuneup victory over the Bengals.
The Utah player of the year and BYU signee finished with 19 rebounds to eclipse the old mark of 18 shared by Bracken Funk (vs. Pleasant Grove last year) and Amos Burgess (vs. Weber in 1998).
The scoring mark of 35 that Haws shares with Sam Burgess remains --- Haws had 33. However, the senior did manage another record with 13 field goals.
"Rebounding is a mentality," Haws said. "I go every night and some nights are better than others."
Scoring-wise, the Knights (9-2) didn't need Haws to light up the score board. Haws' 35-pointer against Springville came in a 59-57 overtime nail-biter, but this was in Knight control after Haws scored the team's first nine points and 11 of the 16 first-quarter total.
In all, Lone Peak put four players in double figures as the Knights posted their highest offensive output of the season.
Tannon Pedersen canned four three-pointers en route to a 16-point night. Nate Austin, the 6-foot-10 BYU signee, overcame foul trouble to score 12 and sank a pair outside of the arc. Tommy Tebbs added 10.
Brighton (5-5) took a quick 7-5 lead behind five points from promising sophomore Corbin Miller, but the Knights took control with an 11-0 run that made it 16-7 with 1:59 left in the first quarter.
Miller finished with 17, and fellow sophomore Austin Hudson made the most of his fourth-quarter playing time for 16, mostly on putbacks.
