Bingham High coach Mark DuBach called the opportunity to play in front of former legends of the Miners' girls' and boys' basketball program an honor. And DuBach and Co. didn't disappoint with the Miners pulling out a late 44-37 win.
But for 16 minutes, the ideal outcome seemed uncertain as both teams struggled to generate any offense in the first half. Stellar defense from both teams stopped big playmakers like Jordan's Colton Burgon, and Bingham's Ben Clifford encountered numerous defenders at every turn.
Despite the slow start, Bingham came out firing in the second half, jumping out to a 24-13 lead with Shad Sommerville solidifying the offensive rhythm, with the junior finishing with 11 points.
"Being a centennial game for the school, there was a lot of pressure on before the game," Sommerville said.
'[The coaching staff] told us to go out and make memories of our own. And I think after a rough start, we were able to do that."
Jordan responded, overcoming a 2-for-15 first-half shooting performance to keep pace with the Miners and climb back late in the fourth quarter to tie the game 28-28 with 5:30 remaining in the game.
Although the Beetdiggers couldn't get anything to fall during the opening minutes, they stuck with their shot selection inside 15 feet, and it paid off.
"We just stuck together," said Jordan coach Rob Geertson. "We hung tight through a tough defensive battle and shots just started to fall."
With two minutes remaining, it was still anyone's game until Sommerville's three-pointer with 1:10 left in the game stuck the final dagger in Jordan's hopes of remaining undefeated.
