OREM - Following each of its kills in the 5A state title game against Lone Peak at the McKay Events Center on Saturday, the Pleasant Grove volleyball team kneeled on the ground and bowed in celebration.

The Vikings had plenty of reason to celebrate early on, but whenever they got up, the Knights brought them right back to their knees, rallying for the come-from-behind five-game victory (25-23, 23-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-9) to earn their second straight state title.

From its onset, the matchup couldn't have been more close - and Lone Peak coach Deanna Meyer knew the Vikings would give the Knights their biggest fight of the year. After earning a hard fought first set victory, Lone Peak dropped two straight, prompting Meyer to find something to re-ignite the Knights' attack.

That something was Lone Peak's Anna Burgess who snapped up one impossible kill after another in the final two games to give the Knights a chance in the fifth game.

But even she isn't quite sure how she posted 38 digs in the game.

"I see our block, I just read the hitter and if I can't read it, I guess," she said.

Meyer, however, knew exactly what was behind the Knights comeback.

"We had to start focusing on the ball. Then the winning took care of itself," she said. "We just played with a lot of heart."

Still, she admitted that the fifth game was "a heart attack waiting to happen." In an emotional final set, the Knights came out on fire and never let up, jumping out to an early 4-1 lead in the set.

Pleasant Grove found a way to climb back to tie things up at six points, but the Knights pulled off a heart-pounding finish by scoring six unanswered points and holding on for the win.

"It was so intense, the most intense match I've ever played in," said Ashlan Rogers, who finished with 23 kills. "We just played with so much heart. I knew we had it when we were up by four points."
