HURRICANE - As Judge Memorial kept making mistakes, Hurricane kept capitalizing, as the Tigers converted enough to seize a 28-17 win Friday in the 3A football playoffs.

After the Tigers and the Bulldogs exchanged back-to-back touchdowns in the second quarter - a 26-yard pass to Hurricane senior Ryan Smith was followed with an impressive 97-yard kickoff return by junior Paul Clark - Judge started shooting itself in the foot.

The Bulldogs fumbled four times, losing three. Judge fumbled twice in the red zone. Three interceptions also spelled disaster.

The second half started with an interception by Hurricane's Tyler Ewell at the 10-yard line. A 5-yard rushing touchdown by Zach Sorenson sent Judge scrambling to at least break even.

Then Hurricane picked up a missed pitch, and Jacob Pugh finished the play, rushing 5 yards for another TD.

Right after Pugh's score, Gary Bracken had his second interception of the night and ninth on the year.

"It felt great. Any big turnover pumps you up, and it fires up the offense when they get on the field," he said.

Hurricane's bulldozing win takes it to the semifinals against Morgan, which got there by knocking off Delta.
