WEST VALLEY - The Hunter Wolverines embraced the halftime homecoming festivities Friday, staging an early comeback then just barely holding on for a tough 20-14 victory in a mistake-riddled game over the Copper Hills Grizzlies.

Hunter broke the ice first, early in the second quarter, when quarterback Brett Lunceford pushed it in on a sneak from about a yard out to cap a 63-yard drive and put the Wolverines up 6-0 after the failed extra point.

It didn't take long for the Grizzlies to respond, however, as quarterback Josh Soter and running back Brian Bell marched down the other way to take a 7-6 lead on a 6-yard Brian Bell sweep into the end zone.

After a low-scoring first half, the trailing Hunter squad came out ready to begin the second half, forcing a fumble on the Grizzlies' opening kickoff return, with Rico Montoya picking up a fumble and scampering 12 yards for the Wolverines' second touchdown. But Lunceford would run in another score to make the score 20-7 halfway into the fourth quarter.

But Josh Soter and the Grizzlies had other ideas, and following Lunceford's second touchdown, Soter marched his team down the field on 5-for-6 passing with 61 yards and a 17-yard touchdown pass to junior wideout Chris Martinez to cap the drive off making the game 20-14 with five minutes to play.

That set up a wild finish, as Hunter punted and caused a Copper Hills fumble. Hunter then fumbled the ball back to Copper Hills. Soter couldn't complete a pass on fourth down and Hunter pulled off the win.

"Those are the games you live for," said Hunters' head coach Dustin Pearce. "Fun, fun stuff."
