SOUTH JORDAN - Excepting three scoring plays, the Bingham offense gained just 30 yards in the first half against Kearns on Thursday. On their other three plays, the Miners gained 161 yards and scored three touchdowns to set up a 42-10 win.

It could have been worse. Bingham squandered a pair of opportunities inside the Kearns 25-yard line, coming away with no points on both drives in the first half.

And there was no need to remind coach Dave Peck about the problems.

"Definitely disappointed with our offense," he said. "We didn't execute really well in the first half. But the defense played really well." No kidding. Kearns' offense was stymied in the first half to the tune of gaining just 28 yards.

Big plays bailed out Bingham's offense.

After a pair of three-and-out series to start the game, Bingham quarterback Jake Soffe hit a wide-open Mike Edmunds on a post pattern for a 66-yard touchdown.

A turnover at the Kearns 10 gave Soffe the opportunity to run in the ball for a 14-0 lead. With Bingham leading 14-3 and less than a minute left in the first half, Soffe hit Matt Green, who made a nifty run for an 85-yard touchdown score and a 21-3 halftime lead.

That was all the Bingham defense would need.
