The Soaring Eagle came into Friday's game against Judge Memorial with a 35-point average margin of victory over their first four opponents. They limited those teams to an average of three points and they posted shutouts in their last two games.
But there were questions about how tough those opponents were, putting doubts in Juan Diego coach John Colosimo's mind.
"I thought maybe we weren't that good defensively," Colosimo said.
For now, those doubts have been put to rest, as the Soaring Eagle forced five turnovers and scored after every one to beat Judge Memorial 35-7 on Friday.
"Judge is big, they have a physical offensive line and great running backs," Colosimo said. "Tonight, we showed we're very good defensively."
Along with the five turnovers - two interceptions and three recovered fumbles - the Soaring Eagle only allowed four first downs the whole game.
Other than a 25-yard touchdown pass from Chris Pell to Keenyn Walker in the third quarter, Juan Diego kept the Bulldogs relatively quiet all night.
The Soaring Eagle got going offensively at the end of the first quarter, scoring two touchdowns in the last minute and 40 seconds. And Juan Diego didn't let up in the second quarter, going into halftime with a 28-0 lead.
"We just had to make sure we stayed within ourselves," said Jacob Doughty, who had six tackles and one sack. "We just tried not to get ahead of ourselves."
Juan Diego finished with 239 yards of offense while holding the Bulldogs to 78 total offensive yards.
"This whole week we've been focused on trying to create turnovers," said quarterback Brian May who completed 4 of 8 passes and ran in a touchdown. "We just capitalized when we needed to."
