The game started off with a Lehi touchdown, when Pioneers quarterback Jordan Smith hit his running back C.J. Fredrickson on a flare pass out of the backfield for a 9-yard touchdown. Kearns then answered back with a 2- yard touchdown run by Alamoti Vaenuku. Kearns, who was playing without starting quarterback J.R. Finau, had a 60-yard pass from their second-string quarterback Tyson Adamson on the drive, that helped set up the touchdown run by Vaenuku.
The teams then traded defensive stops for most of the second half. With 15 seconds left in the second quarter, Kearns blocked a Lehi punt in the Pioneers' end zone and came away with a safety, giving Kearns a 9-6 lead at halftime.
With both offenses struggling to begin the third quarter, Fatu Moala returned a punt 60 yards to set up a Kearns field goal by Taylor Whetman, giving Kearns its biggest lead of the game 12-6. Said Fatu of his return, "I had a couple good blocks and everyone was shifting to the left, and I tried to bounce it outside, but when I cut it to the left, the whole other side of the field opened up."
Fatu also had two interceptions on the night, as well as a couple big grabs as receiver on offense that helped the Cougars hold on in the second half.
Cougars coach Bill Cosper, was proud of his team and relieved to come away with a road win.
"We had too many snaps on defense; our D was on the field for too many plays tonight," Cosper said. "It's a tribute to Lehi, they kept coming after us all night. Now we have a tough game coming up next week against Skyline, and we have to go get ready for them."
