WEST JORDAN - At least five pairs of hands tried to either stop or slow Pleasant Groves Joey Owens in the second quarter.

But, Owens managed to elude every Copper Hills players attempt and ran the ball 73 yards for a touchdown to give the Vikings a commanding lead.

It was just that kind of night for Pleasant Grove, one in which every break went the Vikings way. One in which the Vikings were able to shut out the Grizzlies 31-0 on their homecoming night.

I didn't feel a thing, said Owens, who led the Vikings in rushing yards with 90 on six carries. I took one cut and I just saw the end zone. I saw the block and I just went.

The final score was deceptive. The Grizzlies were competitive - at least in the first half.

They almost cut into the Vikings lead in the first quarter as Copper Hills quarterback Josh Soter was efficient in getting his team in scoring position. The Grizzlies were close to being inside Pleasant Groves 20-yard line but the Vikings Jake Horsley forced a fumble after Copper Hills receiver Chandler Allen made a reception.

Pleasant Grove recovered the ball on its 1-yard line and then went on a 99-yard drive to score on the ensuing play.

That was the biggest factor in the game, Pleasant Grove coach Dale Sampson said. Our offensive was clicking.

But, it was the Vikings game from the beginning.

Pleasant Grove scored on its first play of the game - a 39-yard pass to LeSean Wilcox. Wilcox was successful twice when faking a punt and then running the ball to get a first down. Pleasant Grove also converted twice on third-downs. In stopping Copper Hills every time it threatened to score, the defense recovered two fumbles, had six quarterback sacks and two interceptions.

Things were going our way and I knew it off the bat when we made that first defensive stop, Wilcox said.

But this game was close.

Copper Hills, which played better than the final score showed, suffered its first defeat after starting the season 3-0
