After last week's 2-0 win over Lehi, West Jordan lit up the scoreboard at Mountain View on Friday night. And for the second week in a row, the Jaguars pulled together a game-winning play in the closing minutes, this time in overtime, to earn a 40-37 decision over the Bruins.
Through four quarters, however, it couldn't have been a more even matchup.
Mountain View got up on the Jaguars early after Chris Wright threw a 69-yard pass to Jordan Smith to put the Bruins up 6-0 after one. From that point on, the Bruins and the Jaguars held a track meet on the field, as running backs swapped 50-yard runs to set up a defensive duel on the 1-yard line on nearly every possession.
After missing last week's game, West Jordan's Damien Maestes had a huge opening night for the Jaguars, muscling in two touchdowns from the 3-yard line in the second quarter.
"[Damien] gave our team his heart," said D.J. Tialavea. "He helped us wrap it all up tonight."
Mountain View responded with a track star of its own when Tanner Houston ran in an 85-yard kick return.
In the second half, the Bruins and the Jaguars ran a game of cat-and-mouse that included six lead changes. The yo-yo scoring continued, and by the fourth quarter it was all locked up again at 34-34 with a chance for Mountain View kicker Sam Hickman to lob off the game-winner. But the kick went just wide, sending the game to overtime.
Hickman redeemed himself with a field goal on the Bruins' overtime possession. Mountain View's defense then backed West Jordan into a fourth-down situation, but Tyson Udy called out the last chance play to Tialavea who hopped in the game-winning touchdown.
"I just called it for my boy," said Udy, adding, "Our defense will get better, too. You can put that in all caps if you want."
