Fowler exhibited the poise of a veteran with each drive, shaking would-be sack artists and scorching the Wolverines secondary. He demonstrated a champion's mindset, never letting up even though the scoreboard was clearly in the Darts favor, leading the charge on four consecutive drives that resulted in touchdowns.
"I never could've predicted that happening," Fowler said. "When I was told I'd be the starting quarterback in [training camp] I was nervous . . . but I wasn't nervous [Friday]."
Davis took it right to Hunter from the start. Fowler led a 14-play, 72-yard opening drive, ending in Fowler's first career touchdown pass, nine yards to Jordan Welk. The next three drives would be more of the same.
Davis coach Ryan Bishop wasn't surprised by the super sophomore's play.
"To me, [Fowler's] just our quarterback. He did some good things out there and we'll take it," Bishop said. "I was pleased how the offense kept our defense off the field."
But Fowler wasn't alone.
Running back Tanner Hinds had Wolverines defenders seeing double in the backfield. Hinds touched the ball 21 times through the Darts first four possessions, including one rushing touchdown that enhanced its lead to 14-0 with less than 6:40 remaining in the second quarter.
"[Hinds] was sick, and then dealt with a hip injury heading into this game. So I thought he played really well. He definitely took a lot of pressure off of me," Fowler said.
Fowler and the Darts spoiled Hunter coach Dustin Pearce's debut. Whether it was swapping quarterback Gregg Bitters for Brett Lunceford in the third quarter, or not stopping Davis in the big spots, it was a rough night to say the least for Hunter.
"We need to get better [in a lot of areas]," he said.
* Quarterback Gavin Fowler drives Davis to four consecutive scoring drives in his first start. He throws on nine-yard TD pass and runs one in from a yard out.
