320-page paperback,
$21.95, Collins
A good measure of a guidebook's value is how often it's reprinted. Since this is the 13th edition of this fact-filled book, chances are more than good that thousands of readers have found useful the information contained within. This one is part of a series of Access books written and researched by professional travel writers who live and work in the city. The book contains information not only on Los Angeles but also on surrounding areas such as Pasadena, Long Beach, Catalina Island, Orange County and Disneyland, Santa Monica and Venice. There are also chapters on gay travel, the desert, beach and mountain tours, architectural tours and history. Though walking isn't something associated with Los Angeles, detailed maps in each chapter offer ways to do just that.
Corporate travel affected by high fees
According to a new survey by the National Business Travel Association (NBTA), more than 50 percent of business travel managers say new airline fees are affecting their planning, prompting them to encourage less air travel and eliminate all nonessential corporate travel. Seventy-six percent of those surveyed believe airlines are misleading the public with low and advertised fares by adding substantial fees. And 83 percent indicate that the revival of minimum stays will increase airfare. Domestic business trips are $140 to $175 higher this year, while international travel costs have increased $315 to $400 per trip, the NBTA says.
