TRAVELOGUE

"I Should Have Stayed Home: Hotels Hospitality Disasters at Home and Abroad"

170-page paperback, $14.95, RDI Books

There's nothing many travelers like better than reading about someone else's travel disaster, especially after they have experienced a few of their own. That's what makes this compilation of 37 short essays on bad stays at some unusual hotels a fun read. Learn about a motel with an electrified swimming pool, a Belgian boutique hotel collapsing into a sinkhole, a bathroom door that doesn't open from the inside, a bed-and-breakfast inn with all-night freight trains and, of course, "the best little karaoke whorehouse in Ulaanbaatar." One essay parents will relate to involves a family whose three young children were bloodied at a Chicago swimming pool on the same weekend trip. Fun stuff - in a perverse sort of way.
