Police seek identity of slain suspect

Salt Lake City police said Monday they were still trying to identify the man shot and killed Friday by an officer. Police spokeswoman Robin Snyder also declined to release the officer's name. About 11 p.m. Friday, the officer chased a burglary suspect from a home on Yale Avenue. The suspect allegedly turned and fired at the officer, who returned fire and killed the man, police said.

Victim of party shooting identified

Murray police on Monday identified the man who was shot to death early Sunday. Marchello Cecala, 25, was leaving a party near 300 East and 4500 South about 3 a.m. Sunday when a confrontation broke out. Several shots were fired in a parking lot, one of which struck Cecala. The victim got into his car and drove a short distance before hitting a tree. He died later at St. Mark's Hospital. Detective Jeff Maglish said investigators were still interviewing witnesses on Monday. Police do not know what spurred the shooting and they have no suspect. Cecala was found guilty of receiving stolen property in 2001 and of violating a protective order in May. Maglish said the woman who obtained the protective order against Cecala was not present at the party.

Mother pleads guilty to moving corpse

A 23-year-old woman admitted Monday to moving the body of her 5-month-old daughter to another location after the girl ingested methamphetamine that allegedly belonged to her boyfriend. Mary Joyce Lacey pleaded guilty in 3rd District Court to third-degree felony desecration of a human corpse. In exchange, a third-degree felony possession of methamphetamine charge was dismissed. Lacey has promised to testify against the boyfriend, 44-year-old Raymond Chesley, who is charged with first-degree felony child endangerment. On Dec. 27, 2005, Chesley allegedly left a baggie of meth within reach of the baby, Estella Jean Lacey, who ingested enough to kill her. After the baby died, the mother moved her from Chesley's Taylorsville home to Murray to keep police away from Chesley, who was on parole.
