Jeffs, two others face bigamy charges in Texas

Posted: 9:46 AM- Polygamous sect leader Warren S. Jeffs and two followers face new charges of bigamy in Texas authorities confirmed after two men surrendered Friday to the Schleicher County Sheriff's Office.

Jeffs, Michael E. Emack and Raymond M. Jessop were indicted on felony bigamy Thursday by a grand jury.

Emack, 57, and Jessop, 36, turned themselves in Friday afternoon and were released after posting $10,000 bonds. Bigamy is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

State authorities have not yet released copies of the indictments that would provide details about the charges.

All three men were indicted in July on felony sexual assault charges related to underage marriages. The men spent about a week in jail last month before posting $100,000 bonds. Jeffs is currently jailed in Arizona awaiting trial on similar charges.

Their attorneys had asked the Texas Attorney General's Office and 51st District Judge Barbara Walther to set a more reasonable bond amount for whomever was targeted in the new round of indictments.

Allen Keate and M. Leroy Jessop were also indicted in July on sexual assault; Jessop was was charged with bigamy.

A sixth man, Lloyd H. Barlow, was indicted on three misdemeanor counts of failure to report child abuse. Barlow is the community's physician.

Hearings are set for the men on Sept. 8.
