Draper • Instructors at Juan Diego Catholic High School must be forgetting to teach one of the 10 Commandments, especially No. 7 — "Thou Shall Not Steal."

How else could one explain the thievery committed by the Soaring Eagle girls' basketball team Saturday night in the first round of the Class 3A tournament as it knocked out defending champion Snow Canyon 48-32.

Juan Diego used its impressive defensive skills to force turnover after turnover in a decisive first half that featured more than a few steals.

"We try to get out on defense and create turnovers," said first-year Soaring Eagle coach Tim Turpin. "We want to disrupt things. And I knew we had some size on them. We have relied on our defense all year. We had a lot of energy."

Becca Curran, who led three Juan Diego players in double figures with 13 points and added 11 rebounds, agreed with her coach. She said her team planned to play the game to its strength, which was defense.

Trista Vawdrey added 11 points and Brynn Drummond 10 as Turpin hustled players in and out, keeping them fresh with a defensive intensity that kept Snow Canyon from having more than one player in double figures.

The Warriors never led in this game, and the closest they came was four points early in the first quarter. Juan Diego built leads as big as 19 points on the young Warriors, who had only two seniors on their roster and got a good game from freshman guard Tylei Jensen, who scored 11.

The run to the state quarterfinals has been an interesting one for Turpin, who wasn't named coach until September and did not have much knowledge of the team he was inheriting until practice began.

That didn't show Saturday. His team looked comfortable with his pressing style of play as it knocked out the defending champions in style.
