Zack Greinke was in Salt Lake City to get a final tuneup before returning to his spot in the Arizona Diamondbacks' starting rotation.

The Salt Lake Bees, facing Reno at the start of a five-game series, enjoyed having the chance to test themselves against the 2009 American League Cy Young winner.

The Bees hitters on Wednesday, as it turned out, fared quite well against Greinke, who was on a minor league rehab assignment after hurting his left oblique in a D-Backs game on June 28.

On Greinke's second pitch Wednesday, Salt Lake leadoff hitter Rafael Ortega cracked a home run to right field in the bottom of the first.

In the second, Bees' hitter Cal Towey sent Greinke's first offering of that frame to the spectators in right as well.

Eventually, Salt Lake sent Greinke over his Arizona management-determined 80-pitch limit with a pair of runs in the sixth that gave the home team a 5-3 lead en route to a 6-3 victory.

"My fastball was getting hit hard, but it's been getting hit hard all year, so it's nothing new," said Greinke, who went from the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Diamondbacks prior to the season.

After he came out of the game, Greinke said this rehab assignment was pretty similar to prior experiences for him.

"They've always been really bad outings for me," Greinke said. "And then I always do bad when I get back to the big leagues. Hopefully that part will change."

Greinke gave up his five runs on nine hits, issued a pair of walks but also struck out five batters.

The Bees' game-winning rally in the sixth started with a walk issued by Greinke to Sherman Johnson, who then took second on a wild pitch. Greinke also issued a walk to Towey before he was relieved by Kaleb Fleck.

Eventually, Johnson scored on an Ortega single to right to break a 3-3 tie. Towey then scored on a single by Kaleb Cowart.

Greinke, who is scheduled to start for Arizona on Tuesday against the New York Mets, said his oblique was at "100 percent" and was pleased with his velocity overall, measured generally in the low 90s for his fastball.

"It was great, unless this [radar gun] is just fast," Greinke said. "It was better than normal — I feel really strong."

Attendance for the contest was announced at 8,126 fans, up from the season average of 6,522. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Thursday starting at 5:05 p.m.
