Floating Moooi spheres are now illuminating the six-story open Grand Lobby of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater as finishing work continues on the state-of-the-art project, set to open in mid-October, at 131 S. Main Street in Salt Lake City. Panels inspired by Utah's red rock canyons are going up in the main 2,500-seat Delta Performance Hall, while the center's more intimate Black Box theater is being painted — deep purple. The 185,000-square-foot performing arts center, being built in conjunction with an attached office tower and redevelopment of Regent Street behind, includes 3.8 million pounds of concrete, 4.4 million pounds of structural steel and 10,223 square feet of stage flooring.

The Eccles Theater, which will host touring Broadway shows, concerts and other major entertainment events, is designed by world-renowned architect Cesar Pelli of Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects along with HKS Architects in Salt Lake City. The project is being developed and built jointly by Salt Lake City, the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County at a total cost of $119 million.

Here are photos of the construction from a media tour on Thursday, April 14.
