"Suited"

U.S. Documentary Competition

HHH

A Brooklyn tailor cultivates an interesting clientele in "Suited," a documentary that puts a new spin on the old saw that "clothes make the man." At Bindle & Keep, founder Daniel Friedman was making bespoke suits for Wall Street types, when Rachel Tutera, a transgender male, challenged him to make suits for transgender bodies. Friedman apprenticed Tutera, and now they cater to all kinds of clients, many of them transgender. Director Jason Benjamin captures Friedman and Tutera during consultations, measurements and fittings, creating clothes as individual as the people. The movie's emotional heft comes from meeting the clients, who include a transgender man preparing for his wedding, a transgender man seeking a suit for law school, and a 12-year-old trans boy getting ready for his bar mitzvah. The stories are revealing and heartwarming.
