"Salt Lake Tribune" staff outdoors writer Brett Prettyman was honored with seven awards in this year's Excellence in Craft contest sponsored by the Outdoor Writers Association of America. Prettyman's story about hunting scorpions at night in Utah deserts won first place in the natural history category. Other awards are:
Second place, backcountry sportsman category, for "The Best Jig Around," a story about ice fishers who risk life and limb getting to frozen water in the Uinta Mountains.
Second place, big game hunting category, "Bull Market," about Utah's dominance in producing trophy bull elk.
Third place, camping/backpacking/biking category, "All for One," about daredevils on unicycles on the slickrock around Moab.
Second place, natural history category, "Sage Aphrodisiac," a description of the sage-grouse mating dance.
Third place, small game hunting category, "In It for the Long Haul," about hunters and their dogs.
Third place, for a column, "Value of Keeping Lands Roadless."
