Outdoor notebook: Dress up as a night creature for Antelope Island ride

The 15th annual Antelope by Moonlight Bike Ride is July 18 at 10 p.m. at Antelope Island State Park. The 2008 theme is "Creatures of the Night" and prizes will be awarded to participants who dress up as their favorite creature, with judging at 9:30 p.m. The route is 22 miles and registration fees range from $15 to $25. Early registration is available through 4:30 p.m. on July 3. Helmets, headlights and reflectors are mandatory. Get Outdoors Day

Snowbird is hosting National Get Outdoors Day on Saturday at the resort from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day will highlight outdoor recreation opportunities provided by local and national land management agencies and other outfitters. Children 18 and under can visit booths featuring Smokey the Bear, ride the aerial tram for free and use the climbing wall for free.

Road resurfacing

Starting Monday, the National Park Service will resurface part of the main park highway and the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive in Zion National Park. The project will include a 1.4-mile section from the South Entrance to the junction with the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive and the 6-mile Scenic Drive to the Temple of Sinawava. Roads will be down to one lane and drivers should expect delays of up to 15 to 30 minutes. The resurfacing is expected to take about five days to complete.

BLM meetings

The Bureau of Land Management's Utah Statewide Resource Advisory Council (RAC) will meet on June 26 at the BLM's Salt Lake Field Office, 2370 S. 2300 West, for a field tour and discussion of Five-Mile Pass, including management concerns, a draft plan amendment and rural and urban interface issues. On June 27, from 8 a.m. to noon, the council will meet at the BLM's State Office at 440 W. 200 South, Suite 500, in Salt Lake City to give presentations on recreation users' insurance coverage, updates on the Resource Management Plans and oil and gas as it relates to recreation and cultural resources. A public comment period is scheduled from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. Written comments may be sent to the BLM at 440 W. 200 South, Suite 500 Salt Lake City, Utah, 84101. Both meetings are open to the public.

Nature festival

The fourth annual Swaner Nature Festival will be at the Basin Recreation Field House, 1388 Center Drive, in Park City, on June 21 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The free festival includes music, outdoor recreation, an art contest, nature walks and a plant sale. Classes include beginning wildlife photography, GPS 101, geocaching and a wildflower and weed talk. Visit www.swaner ecocenter.org.

Bird class and field trip

The Great Salt Lake Audubon is hosting a bird identification class and field trip, "Owls and Night Jars," with Tim Avery on Wednesday and June 19 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Sugar House Garden Center, 1400 E. 2100 South, Salt Lake City. The cost is $5 and space is limited. Call Deedee at 272-8060 to reserve your place.

Paddle demo day

REI is hosting a demo day with the newest boats and paddling accessories on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. All skill levels are invited and no registration is required. Free REI clinics

REI is offering free Best of the Wasatch Summer Hiking clinics at both of its stores. The clinic will be at the East Millcreek store, 3285 E. 3300 South, on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and at the Sandy store, 10600 S. 230 West, on June 19, also at 7 p.m. Greg Witt, author of 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Salt Lake City, will talk about the best local waterfalls, summits, lakes and unknown trails.
