Description: From the Lava Flow and Overlook Trailhead, you start down a white sandy trail littered with black lava rocks. You wind through a field of beautiful green sagebrush toward red Navajo sandstone cliffs. Go southwest toward West Canyon. The first of four lava caves is at 0.3 miles into the hike. Just to the south of the fourth cave is West Canyon overlook. Scramble to the top of the ridge for a magnificent view of the lush canyon below. Back on the Butterfly trail, head east through green sage and lava flows toward a large, red petrified dune. The trail continues downhill across a lava wash and then along an unsightly barbed-wire fence. Veer right at another trail sign and follow the now-red sandy lava rock trail south. At 1 mile, near the end of the trail, scramble up a not-too-steep 110-foot petrified dune. Travel east to the end of Butterfly Trail and the parking lot. Add a half-mile to the hike by going south over a field of red petrified dunes to Hidden Pinyon Overlook. Kids will love the climb, and adults will love the views.
