Half of a 4.5 billion-year-old meteorite discovered in Utah near Gunlock in 1982 is on display in the Natural Resources Map and Bookstore, 1594 W. North Temple, Salt Lake City.
Geologist Don Adair found the Gunlock Meteorite, sawed it in half and gave part to the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Adair kept the other half, but recently decided to donate his 18-pound rock to the Utah Geological Survey.
The Gunlock specimen is one of only 18 known meteorite finds in Utah and one of 1,512 officially named meteorites in the United States.
