Outdoor notebook: Soak up the sun, reach for the stars, plus much more

The Salt Lake Astronomical Society will hold a series of free sun/star parties through October to see Saturn, Jupiter, star clusters and more through the observatory's three massive telescopes. Sun parties are 10 a.m. to noon, star parties are from dusk to 11 p.m. at various locations around the Wasatch Front. For more information, call 435-882-1209 or visit slas.us.

Upcoming schedule:

* Saturday: Sun party at Winchester Park, 1250 W. Winchester St., Taylorsville.

* April 26: Star party at Stansbury Park Observatory, 30 miles west of Salt Lake, near Tooele.

* May 9: Star parties at Harmons, 3200 S. 1300 East, Salt Lake City, and Harmons, 10507 S. Redwood Road, South Jordan.

* May 10: Star parties at Stansbury Park Observatory and This Is the Place Heritage Park, 2601 E. Sunnyside Ave., Salt Lake City.

Learn about birds

The Ogden Nature Center announces its community program, "Nestlings, Fledglings and Birds . . . Oh My!", April 26 at 11 a.m. at the center, 966 W. 12th St., Ogden. The workshop will give an introduction to birds in the backyard, nesting habits and accident prevention. Cost is $5 for members, $6 for others. Children 6 and older are encouraged to register. 5K Fun Run

The sixth annual Fly with the Flock 5K Fun Run is May 3 at 8 a.m. at the Ogden Nature Center, 966 W. 12th St. Early registration fees are $18 for adults and $12 for children, which includes T-shirts and a goodie bag; after April 25, cost is $22, $15 for kids. There will also be day-of registration at 6:30 a.m. Children 12 and younger can choose to run 12.5K. A pancake breakfast and introduction to birds of prey will follow the race. Snowbasin closing date

Snowbasin Resort will extended its closing date to April 27 thanks to more than 425 inches of snow. New closing rates are $39, $23 for children. The resort's Tubing Hill closes April 20. Open through closing: lifts Little Cat and Needles Express Gondola; and Earl's Lodge and Needles Lodge. There will also be live music on the plaza from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The Ogden Canyon road will be closed from the mouth of the canyon to the spillway Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for repair.

Shorebird sightings

Join a free bird-watching expedition April 27 at Antelope Island Causeway; meet at 7:30 p.m. in the southeast corner of Shopko's parking lot, 2290 S. 1300 East, Salt Lake City. Colby Neuman will lead the outing to find shorebird species resting and feeding along the causeway before the birds continue their migration to Alaska and the Arctic. Bring lunch and snacks. Green celebration

Celebrate Earth Day with Bend-In-the-River, part of the Lowell Bennion Community Service Center at the University of Utah, Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to noon at 1030 W. Fremont Ave. (1100 South), Salt Lake City. There will be a light breakfast followed by planting demonstrations, garden bed preparation and planting and lunch. Yoga on the rocks

Moab Yoga on the Rocks (MYOTR) has released the dates for its fall retreat schedule in southern Utah. Each retreat includes two yoga sessions a day, guided hiking tours, camping and a delicious fresh organic menu. Retreats will take place Sept. 18-21, Sept. 25-28, Oct. 2-5 and Oct. 9-12.
