Activities include pony rides, wagon rides, living history and animal demonstrations and a treasure hunt. The Li'l Buckaroo Rodeo will also be returning, with stick-pony barrel racing, mutton bustin' and a greased pole with money for the taking, for those who can climb the pole.
Parents can sign up their children ages 6 to 10 at the Heritage Center's Rodeo Grounds for the barrel racing and mutton bustin.' Prizes will be given to the winners in various categories. A variety of food vendors for lunch and snacks will be available at the event. Vendors of handcrafted and heritage items will also be on site.
The festival is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The cost is $8 for adults, $5 for seniors/students and children. Children under age 3 are admitted free. Visit www.awhc.org for more information.
GPS Navigation Day
The REI store in Sandy, 230 W. 10600 South, is holding a GPS Navigation Day April 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants should have some knowledge with GPS as you will practice finding the way from Point A to Point B. Navigation experts will also help participants develop route-finding skills and using the U.T.M. grid system vs. latitude and longitude coordinates. A classroom session will take place at the store, with a field session at Dimple Dell Park. Tuition is $25 for REI members and $35 for nonmembers. Call 801-501-0850 to sign up.
Teton Park Road open
The Teton Park Road in Grand Teton National Park has been plowed and is open for nonmotorized activities such as hiking, biking and in-line skating from the Taggart Lake parking area to Signal Mountain. The Moose-Wilson Road has also been plowed and opened for nonmotorized use.
Fees are required with a $12 7-day permit for foot or bicycle entry.
The Teton Park and Moose-Wilson roads will open to vehicle traffic for the full summer season on May 1.
Gear swap in Ogden
The first annual Wasatch Front Gear Swap is April 19 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ogden Kayak Park.
Participants can bring their gear to sell or find that special piece of equipment they always wanted. Kayak gear will be the main draw, but organizers expect other watercraft, skis, snowboards, camping gear, bikes and various outdoors-related items.
There will be live music, food, kayak slalom demonstrations and local vendors. Profits from the swap will be donated to the Ogden Kayak Park.
The Ogden Kayak Park is along the Weber River. From Interstate 15 northbound take the 24th Street exit and travel east. Turn left (north) on B Avenue. Turn Right (east) and travel two blocks.

Eye on the sparrow
Great Salt Lake Audubon is holding a Sparrow Identification class Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Sugarhouse Garden Center, 2100 South and 1600 East, in Salt Lake City. Tim Avery will lead the class. The cost is $5. Call Sylvia at 801-532-3486 to reserve a spot in the class.
Climbing night
The Salt Lake REI store, 3285 E. 3300 South, East Millcreek, is holding a free adult climbing event tonight from 6:30 to 8:30.
Climbers 16 and older can climb the wall with routes rated from 5.5 to 5.13 in difficulty. Climbing harnesses will be available and climbing shoes can be rented for $2.

8th annual Meltdown Race
The 8th annual Meltdown Race at Snowbasin is April 12. The race involves downhill skiing/boarding, Kombi skiing and a bike ride. Gender-specific age categories range from 12 to 17 to 60-plus.
Registration is $25 in advance and can be done by calling 801-620-1000. Day-of registration is $35 and will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. A race meeting will be held at 7:30 a.m. with the first competitors taking off at 8 a.m. Children will be allowed to run the course untimed.
