Outdoor notebook: See the nation's best skiers and jumpers

The 2008 U.S. Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Championships are Friday to Sunday at Utah Olympic Park and Soldier Hollow. The nation's best ski jumpers and Nordic combined (cross-country ski/jumping) athletes will compete. Competitions Saturday and Sunday are free to the public. Rockport construction

The bridge near the entrance to Rockport State Park on State Road 302 will be replaced and the park will be closed from March 31 to April 14. All park facilities will be closed until the construction is complete.

Track Me If You Can

The Jordanelle State Park naturalist will lead the popular "Track Me If You Can" program Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. Learn about the animals living in the park and how to identify their tracks at the Rock Cliff Nature Center, then head out for a snowshoe walk. Snowshoes are available, but day-use fees are required to enter the park. Registration is required and limited to 20 people. Call 435-649-9540 for information.

Wasatch Mountain Club

The Wasatch Mountain club presents Michael Layton Wednesday for a discussion and slide show on his notable first ascents and the skills that allowed him to become a professional alpinist. Layton, a physician, also will talk about ways to achieve peak performance and stay injury-free. The talk starts at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake REI store, 3285 E. 3300 South, East Millcreek.

Ogden Nature Center

The "Fair Feathered Friends" spring pre-school program is at the Ogden Nature Center, 966 W. 12th St., Tuesday. Classes will be at 9:30 and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The class is for ages 3-5 and the fee is $3. Adult chaperones are free. Participants will learn what makes birds birds. Pre-registration is requested. Birding trip

Great Salt Lake Audubon is holding a birding trip to the Jordan River Parkway in Utah County on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. Call Deedee at 801-272-8060 to confirm.

Free REI clinics

REI staffers will present a "backpacking skills for youth" clinic Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake store, 3285 E. 3300 South, East Millcreek.

Alan Schoenberger, a former world champion skier, will make a presentation titled "A Retrospective of Freestyle Skiing" at 7 p.m. on March 20 at the Salt Lake store.
