Outdoor notebook: Check into snow kiting, stomp out cancer or see eagles soar

The 2008 Superfly Snow Kiting Competition is Feb. 8-10 at Powder Mountain Resort in Eden. In addition to providing a competition in three categories - freestyle, kitecross and big air - the event is a good time for interested people to check out the sport. There will be introductory kite clinics during the weekend.

The action will take place south of the top of the Sunrise Poma Lift in "The Towers" area. Spectators are welcome.

Stomp out cancer

The annual Romp to Stomp Out Breast Cancer, sponsored by Tubbs Snowshoes and the Susan G. Komen Foundation, is Saturday at Mountain Dell Golf Course in Parleys Canyon. The 5K snowshoe walk starts at 9:30 a.m.; the 3K snowshoe fun race begins at 9 a.m. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m.

Snowshoes from Tubbs will available free on a first-come first-served basis. The cost is $25 per person in advance and $30 at the race. Proceeds will go toward breast-cancer research, education and screening. Call 802-253-7398 or visit www.tubbsromp tostomp.com for more information.

Talk about rare plants

The Utah Native Plant Society is hosting "Up the Creek Without a Trail: Rare Plants in our Local Canyons," presented by Bill Gray, Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake REI store, 3285 E. 3300 South, East Millcreek.

Bald Eagle Days

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is hosting Bald Eagle Day with free viewing events Saturday and Feb. 9. Spotting scopes will be available at each site, and state biologists and volunteers will help visitors spot eagles and answer questions.

On Saturday, viewing is at Fountain Green State Fish hatchery east of Nephi, Split Mountain on the Green River near Jensen in northeastern Utah, and in the Cedar Valley northwest of Cedar City. On Feb. 9, viewing is at the Salt Creek Waterfowl Management Area near Corinne and at the Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area west of Farmington.

Viewing times are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., except at Salt Creek Waterfowl Management Area, where hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Biologists say the best time to see the largest number of eagles is between 2 and 4 p.m. Visit www.wildlife.utah. gov for more information.

Birding trips

Great Salt Lake Audubon will host several birding trips. Beginning birders are welcome.

Hugh Gilliam will lead a trip to the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge on Saturday with tundra swans as the target sighting. There is an 8:30 a.m. departure from Sugar House. Call Hugh at 801-582-9284 for details.

Free REI clinics

The popular GPS 101 clinic is tonight at 7 at the Sandy REI store, 230 W. 10600 South.

The Alta Historical Society and The Alf Engen Ski Museum Foundation are sponsoring a talk by Suzy Harris Ryting and Bill Ryting Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake store, 3285 E. 3300 South, East Millcreek. The Rytings will provide a retrospective on ski racing and the early days of skiing at Alta.

An ice-climbing clinic will be Feb. 7 at the Sandy store. Tracy Jensen of REI will talk about required gear and places to go ice climbing.
