Outdoor notebook: Utah WinterCross, Bald Eagle Days and more (with video)

The second event of the first annual Utah WinterCross arena-style motocross series is Friday and Saturday at the Wasatch County Event Center in Heber.

Riders of all ages and skill levels will participate in the event, which the public is invited to watch.

Utah WinterCross includes eight rounds of races and will also offer specialized pro, mini, peewee, women's, ATV, big bike and pit bike classes. The indoor event will present jumps, bumps, berms and turns. Each night will showcase more than 40 races.

Hardware Ranch trip

The Utah Museum of Natural History is holding a family field trip to Hardware Ranch in Cache County on Saturday. Visitors will ride horse-drawn sleighs among herds of Rocky Mountain elk on the state-owned wildlife-management area. Transportation to the ranch from the museum and lunch is provided for $75.

Field trips in February include "Ecology and Geology of Soda Springs and Lava Hot Springs" in Idaho and "Dog Sledding in West Yellowstone." A trek to Topaz Mountain in Juab County will be featured in March. A minimum age of 8 is recommended.

Bald Eagle Days

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is holding the 18th annual Bald Eagle Day with free viewing events on Feb. 2 and 9.

Spotting scopes will be available at each viewing site, and state biologists and volunteers will also be at each site to help visitors spot eagles and to answer questions.

Biologists say the best time to see the largest number of eagles is between 2 and 4 p.m. Bald Eagle Day is one of the Division of Wildlife Resources' most popular wildlife-viewing events.

Bald Eagle Day events start Feb. 2 with viewing at Fountain Green State Fish hatchery east of Nephi, Split Mountain on the Green River near Jensen in northeastern Utah, and in the Cedar Valley northwest of Cedar City.

The events continue on Feb. 9 with viewing at the Salt Creek Waterfowl Management Area near Corinne and at the Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area west of Farmington.

All viewing times are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the exception of the Salt Creek Waterfowl Management Area, where it will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Backyard Bird Count

The 11th annual Great Backyard Bird Count will be Feb. 15-18 with the theme "Count for Fun, Count for the Future." Anyone can count birds wherever they are and enter the tallies online at www.birdcount.org. These reports contribute valuable information for science and conservation, spotlighting changes in bird population and distribution from year to year. The count is led by Audubon and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Participation is free and no registration is required.

The Great Backyard Bird Count is a free event, sponsored in part by Wild Birds Unlimited. Everyone who participates will be entered in a drawing to win bird-related prizes. For more information, visit www.birdcount.org.

Tracking program

Antelope Island State Park is holding a Junior Ranger program in tracking Saturday at noon. The program is geared for youth ages 6-12, but all ages are welcome. Meet at the visitor center on the island and dress for an outdoors walk. Call 801-721-9569 for more information.

Wasatch Citizens Series

The Timberland Wasatch Citizens Series Nordic ski race series continues with the next event Saturday at Mountain Dell Golf Course in Parleys Canyon. This is a 10K classical technique event. Visit www.utahnordic.com for more information.

Preschool star program

The Ogden Nature Center, 966 W. 12th St., is holding the Starry Starry Nights preschool program for ages 3-5 on Monday, Feb. 13 and Feb. 21 with classes at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Children will get to know the nighttime canopy, hear tales of the night sky and enjoy a midnight snack.

Birding trip
