Action sports filmmakers, athletes and fans will gather for the festival, and many of the events and screenings will be open to the public. "Bra Boys," a surfing documentary from Australia narrated by Russell Crowe, will open the festival Saturday at 8:15 p.m. Many of the surfers in the film will be on hand after the viewing. Open forums will be held after each screening with filmmakers and featured athletes.
Other screenings run Saturday and Tuesday from noon to 10 p.m. and Wednesday from noon to 5 p.m. Tickets are $5 per movie or $30 for a five-day pass. Visit www.x-dance.com for a film schedule and more information.

Free REI clinics
The popular GPS 101 clinic is being held tonight at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake store, 3285 E. 3300 South, East Millcreek. The presentation will cover an introduction to the GPS system, types of receivers and their common use, and basic GPS functions.
Stephen W. Hinch, author of Outdoor Navigation with GPS, will be on hand at the Salt Lake store Wednesday at 7 p.m. to present a Geocaching 101 clinic. Learn how to use your GPS to hunt for treasure.
Learn the basics of snowshoeing Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Sandy store, 230 W. 10600 South. REI staffers will present the how-to clinic and talk about appropriate gear selection and nearby trails to get you out on the snow.
Build a snowman
The Ogden Nature Center, 966 W. 12th St., is holding a children's craft workshop Jan. 26 at 10:30 a.m. Children 6 and older will build a sock snowman filled with birdseed and decorated with a scarf and carrot nose. Momentum indoor climbing gym in Sandy will hold the USA Climbing Adult National Climbing Championships Jan. 25 and 26 featuring competitors who will be in Utah to attend the annual Winter Outdoor Retailer Show at the Salt Palace Convention Center. The competition also will be open to locals 15 and older with recreational, intermediate, advanced and over-40 categories. Cash prizes will be offered in the open and speed categories.
