Outdoor notebook: Flock to the Great Salt Lake Audubon's bird class and more

Birder Tim Avery and Great Salt Lake Audubon will present a birding class series beginning with a class on basic bird identification Nov. 28. There will be no classes in December, but they will resume on Wednesday evenings January through March. Avery, who frequently contributes photos for The Salt Lake Tribune's weekly Bird Sighting column, will use some of his photos of Utah birds in the classes. The cost is $5 per person per class. Ken Sanders to muse on Edward Abbey

Ken Sanders, owner of Ken Sanders Rare Books in Salt Lake City, will present a lecture Tuesday titled "Edward Abbey, Earth First!, The Monkey Wrench Gang and Me: Musings on the late author of Monkey Wrench Gang and Desert Solitaire."

Sanders will speak at 7 p.m. in Vieve Gore Concert Hall in Westminster College's Jewett Center, 1250 E. 1700 South, Salt Lake City. He will reflect on his friend, make selected readings from Abbey's works and provide rare audio and video footage.

Jim Demoux will discuss fishing in Utah

Author Jim Demoux will discuss fishing in Utah, including lesser-known waters, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Stonefly Society of the Wasatch monthly meeting. The meeting is at the Salt Lake County Fish and Game Meeting House, 1177 W. Bullion, Murray.

Head to Wellsville for

a stargazing party

The American West Heritage Center in Wellsville is holding a free stargazing party Nov. 16 at 9 p.m. Jim Davis of Utah State University will point out the constellations, offering American Indian interpretation and providing a background on early astronomers. Dress warmly and bring telescopes, binoculars and blankets. Visit awhc.org for information.

American West Heritage Center's Tellabration

The American West Heritage Center in Cache Valley is holding its third annual Tellabration on Nov. 17 starting at 7 p.m.

Visitors will gather to hear the likes of American Indian storytellers Robert and Terri Lynn TallTree. The couple will share their insights on personal and professional balance, purpose, leadership and renewal.

Utah storyteller and American West Heritage Center program director David Sidwell will also share some of his tales. Visit awhc.org for more information.
